If you are looking for a good article on Exercise and Diabetes, I have found a great one for you. Rusty at FitnessBlackBook.com has a detailed article on Exercise and Diabetes. In summary, Rusty discusses the two types of diabetes, Type 1 and Type 2 (noting that Type 1 diabetes in NOT preventable). Type 2 diabetes is often caused by lifestyle choices and usually can be improved with diet and exercise.

Of course, we know that part of controlling diabetes is changing your eating habits, however, exercise can help too. It was interesting to read that a study in the Journal of the American Medical association found that a combination of aerobic and resistance training was better than just walking or resistance training alone for diabetes patients.

Elliptical machine help?

Recently I got an elliptical machine and while it wasn’t an expensive type, it wasn’t a cheap either.
Anyways, my friend helped me put it together and the thing has really tight resistance. I only have it set to level 1 manual and it is too hard to use. I am worn out after only 5 minutes. And the incline? Forget it.
I have never had this problem on an elliptical and was wondering if there is a way to loosen the resistance any?
(I’ve read the manual–doesn’t say anything about it)

Answer:

When you were assembling it you probably done something wrong with the resistance. You might have put the piece(s) in the wrong way, or maybe tightened something too much, when I bought a multigym I had the same problem then I realised that I put the cable reels in the wrong way and tightened the bolt too much, hope it helps.

Answer:

Pearshape is GENETIC. It is pretty much impossible to get rid of it completely – so don’t have any high hopes :/ sorry just need to warn you about that!!!

Anyway – If you need to get a machine, get a running machine.

Why? With bikes or ellipticals, people ‘think’ they’re exercising and loosing weight but they’re really not. All they’re doing is letting the machine do the work for them – they never do it properly cause it needs ALOT of speed and resistance to make it effective…

Get a track-running thing. It’s SO much better and will work wonders, like 10x faster than an elliptical. The main thing is to get your heart beat up and pumping for 20 minutes – after that, you start to burn fat, so continue on for 15 minutes of good heart pumping exercise.

If you aren’t breathing heavily, sweating or panting after a workout – YOU HAVEN’T DONE A THING.

Diet: stick to 3 small meals and 2 small snacks in between – Avoid carbohydrates FOREVER. Focus on Vegetables and fruits because these will help shed weight.

And remember, pear shape is genetic – my friend is a super workout freak and she has, and always will have, a pearshaped body. But don’t fret, she’s sexy too! Pear shaped people can be sexy if they aren’t so shy!

I just bought an elliptical trainer… Now what?

Today I am picking up my elliptical trainer I bought. It’s really nice with adjustable resistance, digital meters, etc and I can’t wait to use it! But, I need some advice on how to use it effectively so that I can actually tone up and get into shape.

I have never been the athletic type, so this is a big step for me (but a positive one, since I really want to get into shape so that I can be athletic) and I don’t want to end up killing myself in the first week of doing this. However, I still want to be doing something right and effective.

I am not terribly overweight. I have some problem areas to work on, but I only need to lose about 10-15lbs. I am 125lbs, and for the record, only 5’3″. Can anyone give me some pointers on what will get me into better shape? My problem areas are my upper arms (flabby), my thighs and butt, and my love handles.
I don’t know what the ‘fat burning program’ is. There are loads of different elliptical trainers out there, but mine didn’t come with any programs. Just the machine.

Answer:

Well, go at a steady pace, and drink plenty of water to keep you hydrated is my first tip.

Also, do it for as long as you can and time yourself. Do it about 3 times a week to help you improve stamina on top of getting in shape. Hopefully you should improve by a little time each week. Set yourself a target, for instance ‘to improve by a minute each week’. Make it realistic too!

One last thing – warm up and stretch to ensure you don’t get any injuries!

How many calories does an elliptical burn?

The machine I’ve been doing my workouts on is a Elliptical PS900 by True Fitness.

About every hour or so during the night, I sneak in 5 minutes on it (enough to burn some calories without getting sweaty) with the resistance set to 14, my weight entered as 195 and with it on the Manual setting (resistance does not change during the workout).

After I get off work in the morning, I change clothes and spend 40 minutes on it with the resistance set to 9, my weight entered as 195 and with it on the Fat Burn setting (every 2.5 minutes, resistance goes up, up, up, up, down, up, down, up, down, down, unchanged, down, down, stop).

According to the machine’s readout, I burn 78 calories on the 5 minute workouts and 506 calories on the 40 minute workouts. But there’s a problem. In figuring the calories burned, the machine’s electronics only takes my weight and the resistance level into account. Speed is not taken into account. I could be going 20rpm’s or 100rpm’s and the amount of calories it says I’ve burned remains unchanged.

I like to maintain 70rpm’s during both workouts. How many calories might I actually be burning?

Answer:

You could use a heart rate monitor, and try to keep your pulse at your target level for the longer workout and ignore the five minute workout, as it is useless. The first five minutes are a warmup. In general, instead of the calories, burned, which is an estimate, consider the results over a period of time. Or call the company and ask directly. There should be a warranty with it and an 800 number.

Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse found that the talk test was an accurate test to determine workout intensity. Over exerting yourself while exercising is not healthy or productive, yet heart monitors are not always available or accurate. Instead, consider using the talk test.

While exercising, try talking. If you can talk at a comfortable level without stopping or trying to catch your breath, this is a good sign that you are exercising at an appropriate level. Now, you should be breathing heavier and may feel a bit winded. If you don’t feel like you are breathing heavy, you are probably exercising a too light of a level.

Researchers determined that the talk test was about as accurate as a heart monitor and ventilatory threshold readings.

Answer:

To lose weight you will need a combination of both.

Resistance training is very important because building lean muscle can burn up fat and take the place of it. Having more lean muscle mass will also really speed up your metabolism so that you are burning more calories, even at rest. But cardio is also very important too. It keeps your heart healthy and burns calories, which helps you create the caloric deficit you need for weight loss.

Answers:

Loosing weight is not a mathematical equation so do not encourage or discourage yourself by saying can i lose 1.5 kilos a week because every body is different and there is no way to know how much you will loose! One week you may lose .5kilos and the next 2 kilos. You have to change your workout up constantly to keep youself from hitting a plateau. Your weight loss also depends on your diet. Just remember 3 meals a day 1-2 snacks and keep it healthy and in the 1500 range. You cant just eat a 1500 calorie slice of pizza and then not eat any more for the day you have to feed your body plenty of protein, veggies, fruit, and good carbs. Your regiment seems good to me but I am personally not qualified to tell you what your body is capable of and what it needs. Seeking the help of a professional is always advised for good reason. The only suggestion I might have is to change it up a little so you dont get bored with it. I understand that you are doing so by toning a specific part of the body each day but working out in the gym and taking walks isnt always the answer. Playing sports, being active outdoors and such will burn just as much if not more calories and you will be entertaining your mind at the same time! Have fun dont stress out and dont worry about the numbers they will come in time!

Am i doing something wrong with weight loss?

It’s kind of a hazy thing to ask online but, i’m eating in and around 1500 daily, salad, fruits and vegetables all i drink is water and for 3 weeks have been going to the gym for 1-2 and a half hours

Normally i can get 1000+ calories burnt on the machines if they’re near accurate
I use the Elliptical trainer normally 20 minute sessions on full resistance, my heart rate is normally 170-180 in between i do 50 minutes normally on that
The treadmill is also in there for a while 15 minutes each time
i do a little bit of weight lifting but not much

My question is am i doing anything wrong ? i’m not seeing a whole lot of results on the scale

Answer:

Looks like you’re off to a great start. The only thing you’re doing wrong is not including protein. Have 4-5 small meals a day and make sure to include some kind of protein in each of those meals as it is very important for boosting your metabolism and it also keeps you full for longer.

I would also suggest doing more weight lifting as building muscle also boosts your metabolism.

Following blueberries on the list is Concord Grapes (with two thirds of the antioxidant activity of blueberries), strawberries, kale and spinach.

Why are antioxidants important?

Antioxidants are a group of minerals, vitamins and enzymes that provided positive health effects for your body. Antioxidants can help fight free radicals (atoms which cause damage to the cells) which can lead to cancer or other harmful degenerative diseases.

Dark Blue in Color

The pigment that makes blueberries that rich blue color is called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are antioxidants – the deeper the color of the fruit, the more anthocyanins it contains.

According to Brad Pilon, a nutritionist who works in the weight loss industry, a diet plan that includes fasting combined with weight training will help you lose weight faster and it will NOT harm your health. Brad’s diet plan is called Eat Stop Eat and he states that the belief that fasting has a negative effect on metabolism is incorrect. In fact, fasting for a short period can have positive dieting effects.

Brad just came out with a new expanded version of Eat Stop Eat. There are two plans available one for women and one for men. Many diet plans today tell you that you must continually eat to lose weight. Brad’s plan includes limiting fasting that he believes breaks the cycle of addiction to food. According to his website, short term fasting actually INCREASES the activity of fat burning enzymes.

Do you want more information? Brad is offering a FREE WORKOUT – “Elimination Workout” – just by sending him your name and email address. Also included are interviews, articles and downloads that show you the science behind Eat Stop Eat before you buy! Just scroll down his webpage and you will find the box to enter your name and email address.

What you you expect with the Eat Stop Eat program? You will be able to get rid of fat without worry about your metabolism or going into “starvation mode.” Plus, you will find that Eat Stop Eat is an EASY diet plan. Not like some other complicated plans.

If you don’t want to worry about food, or eating the right amounts at the right time, this is the diet for you!

Women who took part in the study participated in either a total-body weight-training routine for one year or body-weight-only exercise classes. The women in the first group scored 13 percent higher on mental attention tests. Teresa Liu-Ambrose, Ph.D. states:

Learning proper lifting form and technique stimulates brain function, which improves mental skills, such as concentration and memory.

Dr. Liu-Ambrose was the lead study author and is an assistant professor of physical therapy at the University of British Columbia.
