Blueberries – Great Antioxidant Fruit

According to a study by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA), blueberries rank number one in antioxidant activity compared to 40 other fresh fruits and vegetables. Following blueberries on the list is Concord Grapes (with two thirds of the antioxidant activity of blueberries), strawberries, kale and spinach.
Why are antioxidants important?
Antioxidants are a group of minerals, vitamins and enzymes that provided positive health effects for your body. Antioxidants can help fight free radicals (atoms which cause damage to the cells) which can lead to cancer or other harmful degenerative diseases.
Dark Blue in Color
The pigment that makes blueberries that rich blue color is called anthocyanins. Anthocyanins are antioxidants – the deeper the color of the fruit, the more anthocyanins it contains.
Fitness Magazine has put together a bunch of blueberry recipes for you to enjoy. My favorite is the Blueberry Tart with Walnut Crust. Yum!
